Pancharatnam Fellowship:
A limited number of Pancharatnam Fellowships are available at the Raman Research Institute for young researchers with a demonstrated ability to conduct original and independent work. This fellowship is for three years and is usually offered to applicants who have completed at least one postdoctoral period after their doctorate.
Applications for Pancharatnam Fellowships are always welcome and there are no closing dates. Our offers are normally made in mid-February and mid-August. The processing time for applications is between four to six months. The candidate may be invited to visit the Institute and give a seminar and interact with researchers at the Institute, as part of the selection process.
Areas of current research at the Raman Institute are:

Pancharatnam Fellowship appointments are for three years. Selected candidates will be paid a Fellowship, between Rs.50,000 and Rs.55,000, depending on their experience and their research project will be independently funded; support for research related travel is also provided. Provisions are made for accommodation and partial assistance with relocation.
Pancharatnam Fellows are expected to be able to work independently at the Raman Institute and have the academic freedom of choice in research area and collaboration. Nevertheless, it is desirable that applicants have professional research interest and proven track record in areas with significant overlap or association with the ongoing and envisaged activities at the Institute so that scientific interactions and collaborations take place.
The RRI values interactions and does not desire that members work in isolation: participation in the academic activities of the Institute, participation in student supervision as co-guides and collaboration with other research staff is encouraged. Many of the research groups are engaged in experimental activities and opportunities exist for resident research fellows to participate. The appointments do not entail any teaching responsibilities.
Interested candidates should submit their:
(a) Curriculum Vitae,
(b) List of Publications,
(c) A resume detailing their previous research and other academic activities, and
(d) A statement outlining their anticipated research activities while at the Raman Institute. In the case of Pancharatnam Fellows, the selection would be substantially weighted by their research proposal for the work that they aim to do at RRI.
Applications should be sent to:
The Director
Raman Research Institute
C V Raman Avenue
Sadashivanagar
Bangalore 560 080. India.
They should also request at least three referees to send letters of recommendation. Such letters will be made available to only those involved in decision making. Applicants may inform referees that RRI anticipates receiving considered comments, foremost, on the suitability of the candidate for a fellowship at RRI; additionally, on the demonstrated ability and potential for independent comprehensive work – both in identifying new research problems and taking ideas to conclusion.
RRI would like to know how long the referee has known the applicant and in what capacity. RRI would like to have the comments of the referee on the track record and ability of the candidate to interact and communicate effectively with peers, including comments on the experience of the referee in their interactions with the candidate and an assessment on whether the candidate might be able to adapt comfortably to living conditions prevailing in India and at RRI.
We prefer to receive applications and supporting letters in soft copy. The preferred format is PDF files. To avoid confusion all application files should all be attached to a single email message. These may be sent to director@rri.res.in
