Ramalingaswamy Re-Entry Fellowship:
Call it the reversing of brain drain from the country. The DBT is keen to get back the precious scientific minds born and nurtured in the country that due to several reasons had gone away elsewhere, and hence the Ramalingaswamy Re-entry Fellowship for such biotechnologists by providing them an attractive avenue to pursue R&D in Indian institutions.

The department has resources to bring up to 50 such brilliant brains back to the country every year. Scientists to apply in response to periodic advertisements on DBT website

Eligibility:
Any Indian national holding a Ph.D., M.D., M. Tech, M.Sc. or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record as reflected in publications and other recognitions and with at least three years of post-doctoral research experience in overseas research laboratories.

Work area for applicants: Life sciences and biotechnology, bio-engineering, health care (human and animal), agriculture and veterinary biotechnology, bio-energy and allied areas.

Anyone currently working in India is not eligible.

The programme allows returnees to work as faculty or scientists (Scientist-D, or tier four from the top) take up research assignments and supervise Doctoral/MS students.

Monthly remuneration: Rs. 75,000/.

Other benefits:
House Rent Allowance: Rs. 7,500/- p.m.. If the host institute provides accommodation, no HRA is admissible.

Research/contingency grant:
Rs. 10.00 lakh (Rs one million) for the 1st year, Rs. 7.50 lakh (0.75 million) for the 2nd year and Rs. 5.00 lakh (0.5 million) for the subsequent 3 yrs. for purchase of consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred for the implementation of research proposal.

Medical benefits, transport allowance, leave travel allowance and other benefits DBT encourages host institutions to provide these as per their prevailing norms for their employees of equivalent rank.

Fellows retain an option for drawing either the fellowship or salary if they are appointed at a suitable permanent scientific position. Fellows opting for salary can continue to avail the research /contingency grant with prior approval of DBT.

Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellows could take up fellowship at any of the scientific institutes/ universities in the country. However, application should be duly forwarded by the competent authority of the host Institute.

Awardees are eligible to apply for research grants to any of the funding agencies towards accomplishment of research proposal. However, the Co-PI has to be a permanent employee of the host institution.

How long?:
