National Merit Scholarship Scheme:

In replacement of the earlier National Scholarship Scheme, this scheme was introduced with effect from the 2004-05 session, but it continued only for three years before getting withdrawn with effect from the 2007-08 session.

Several changes were effected in the funding pattern, rate, quota, selection criteria etc. and  the main distinctive features of this scheme are
** The scheme is absolutely centre-funded.
** The parental income ceiling is Rs. 1.00 lakh per annum.
** Total quota of scholarships for the state is 1421.

National Merit Scholarship Rates & Quota (for West Bengal):
Classes IX – X :
Rate per month : Rs. 250/- (for 10 months in a year)
State’s quota of scholarship (NMS) : 678

Classes XI – XII :
Rate per month : Rs. 300/- (for 10 months in a year)
State’s quota of scholarship (NMS) : 853

Graduation :
Rate per month : Rs. 500/- (for 10 months in a year)
State’s quota of scholarship (NMS) : 426

Post-Graduation :
Rate per month : Rs. 750/- (for 10 months in a year)
State’s quota of scholarship (NMS) : 142

The procedure which is followed for selecting candidates at the PG & UG-level for the National Merit Scholarship Scheme as is follows:
The State’s quota (142) for PG – level scholarships (NMS) is divided among different universities of the state. The universities then prepare their own Merit Lists (as per the quota) based on the results of their students in their graduation – level examinations and on the annual family income of the students, and distribute the blank prescribed application forms with the Entitlement Cards among them which the students duly fill up before submitting directly to the Scholarship & Stipend Section of the Education Directorate, West Bengal.

For the UG – level National Merit Scholarships (quota = 426), the West Bengal Higher Secondary Council prepares the merit list and distribute the format i.e. prescribed, application forms plus Entitlement Cards to the suitable HS – passed candidates in a similar manner as described above.

Ans: Non- Migrating : Rs. 75/

What’s the procedure of name/ surname correction in Registration Certificate?
Ans: To fill-up form for correction and submit at the respective Regional Office of the Council along with attested xerox copy of Admit Card/ Mark sheet of Madhyamik Examination.
Fee: Nil upto 31st Dec. of the year of issue
Rs. 100/ beyond 31st Dec. of the year of issue
Mentioned ECON in the Form, but printed ECOG in the Registration Certificate.

How to be corrected?
Ans: Submit application to the Deputy Secretary of the respective regional office along with school’s copy of the form and proof for attending classes in the subject claimed.
Such correction required to be made before Annual Examination (XI).

Photo not matched with that of the candidate or mismatched with another candidate. How to make correction?
Ans: Submit application to the Deputy Secretary of the respective regional office along with school’s copy of the form pasting passport size photograph of the candidate/s concerned.

Signature not matched with that of the candidate or mismatched with another candidate. How to make correction?
Ans: Submit application to the Deputy Secretary of the respective regional office along with school’s copy of the form pasting passport size photograph of the candidate/s concerned and signed properly in specified area of the form.

What’s the fee for Annual Examination (XI)?
Ans: Non-Lab Based: Rs. 60/
Lab Based: Rs. 70/
Late fine: Rs: 40/

Lost Registration Certificate. How to get Duplicate one?
Ans: Obtain a form for duplicate Registration Certificate and submit to the respective regional office along with original GD copy.
Price of form : Rs. 15/
Fee for duplicate document: Rs. 80/ (ordinary)
Rs. 90/ (emergency)

Applied for Registration Certificate with late fine, but name not printed in the Registration Confirmation List. What to do?
Ans: Please contact at the respective Regional Office along with the office copy of form, proof of submission of requisite fee and attested xerox copy of mark sheet of Madhyamik Examination.

Applied for Registration Certificate in due time, but not received. What to do?
Ans: Please contact at the respective Regional Office along with the office copy of form and Registration Confirmation List.

Applied for Registration Certificate in due time, did not sign in the Registration Confirmation List. Registration Certificate not received. What to do?
Ans: Please contact at the Regional Office with Dispute List signed duly by the Headmaster of the concerned institution.

Passed Madhyamik Examination in 2009.Applied for Registration Certificate in due time. In the Registration Confirmation List “Dispute” has been written in case of year of passing mentioning “0000”. What to do?
Ans: The phrase the year of passing “0000” has to be cut through by pen in Registration Confirmation List and actual year of passing has to be written. An attested xerox copy of mark sheet of Madhyamik Examination has to be attached.
