Udyam Scholarship Program:
Udyam is a Public Charitable Trust founded in 2011 by the alumni of National High School and National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore. It is a non profit organization. Udyam’s purpose is to identify, mentor and help underprivileged and deserving students of 10th Standard in furthering their education. Initially the students are from National High School and we plan to extend our activities to other institutions in a phased manner. In addition, Udyam assists teachers in improving their skills, as well as provide state of the art tools and technologies to improve the school and college infrastructure.

Udyam in Sanskrit means “Industriousness”. Our mission is to foster a generation of students who will add value to their profession, to society and to themselves.

The preliminary selection of students is made by the teachers at the school. The final selection of Udyam scholars is by the members of the Trust after objective test, essay writing, personal interviews and visits to the applicants’ residences. The main criteria for selection is the students’ passion, motivation, merit and means. The financial support will be extended upto Masters’ level for scholars opting for science, commerce or humanities and up to Bachelors’ level for those who opt for engineering or medical degrees.

It is expected that the scholars maintain certain minimum academic and social standards.

The Trustees of Udyam will also ensure that each student is attached to a Mentor. e.g. If a scholar is passionate about becoming a child specialist, Udyam will identify a paediatrician within or outside the Trust who will guide the student right through his/her graduation. Udyam Mentoring will thus help these Scholars to excel in their chosen careers and foster in them a sense of social responsibility.

Who is an Udyam Scholar?:
A student who has the passion to be an achiever, the capability to articulate a career goal, demonstrates industriousness, but does not have the means to achieve them is eligible to be a Udyam Scholar. Udyam Scholars are nurtured and his/her talents harnessed to shape them into worthy individuals.

The headmaster and class teachers of National High School select 30 out of 550 students who have consistently performed well in their VIII and IX standards. These children take an objective test in mathematics and science and also write an essay on one of a choice of topics. Fifteen students are shortlisted and required to attend a personal interview with the Udyam Scholarship Committee.

The committee makes a list of ten students based on the students’ skills in articulating what they want to be and why. As part of due diligence a visit to each of these students’ homes is made. This is to meet with the parents to ascertain the need and also to explain the benefits and limitations of the Udyam Scholarship Program. After these meetings, the results are consolidated and five students are chosen as Udyam Scholars by the Scholarship committee.

Student Initiative – Udyam Scholarship Program:
Udyam believes in creating future leaders! With this goal in mind, Udyam is carrying out a scholarship program where 5 students are identified & nurtured to make them into worthy individuals & Leaders. The scholarship programme starts from 10th Std to & is carried out untill the scholars’ complete their under graduate studies in a field of their choice.

Scholarship Identification Process:
Management & Staff of National High School select 30 bright & needy students of 9th Standard. A tough objective type test comprising Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Physics, Chemistry, Biology is administered. Udyam wants to ascertain the fundamental concepts & understanding of these subjects by the students. Along with the objective test, an essay competition is administered. Udyam wants to ascertain knowledge, articulation skill, language & grammar proficiency of the students.

The committee, based on the students’ skills in articulating what they want to be and why, choose the pre final list of 10 students. The committee as part of due diligence visits each of these 10 students’ homes to meet with the parents, both to ascertain the need and also to explain the benefits and limitations of the Udyam Scholarship Program. After meeting the 10 students and their parents, 5 students or Udyam Scholars are chosen. Udyam plans to support these students from 10th Standard until they graduate in any professional course of their choice.
